Matariki – The Maori New Year
Kia Ora, when the Star constellation known as the Seven Sisters: Waiti, Waita, tapu-a-nuku, Tapu-a-rangi, Waipuna-a rangi, Ururangi and Matariki appear usually in the months of May, June or July. The appearance of Matariki in the morning sky is considered vital on its first outing. If the stars in the cluster are clear and bright, it is thought the year ahead will be warm and productive. If they appear hazy and shimmering, an unproductive year is in store. We celebrate by sharing the knowledge, planting the seeds and reflecting on the year that has past.

Te Whetu Arataki – “The Guiding Star” was given by Uncle Dan Heke when Maori Tourism Development in Tauranga was in its embryonic stage. This symbolises those intrinsic values that guide us as Maori, such as the spirit of manaakitanga-hospitality, all of which is a keen driver for the traveller who wants to come and experience Aotearoa.
